 Good design, built to last

Brothers Mark and Derek Gale run neighbouring dairy farms in Victoria’s south-west, and sometimes find it convenient to split the load when it comes to machinery purchases.

In 2007, Mark bought a Kverneland NGS451 power harrow from local Colac dealer Rhys Evans.

“We looked at the competition but the Kverneland is really heavy duty and has more rotors and more tines per width than any of the others we saw,” Mark said.

“We use it for deep tilling for maize.  The large clearance between the tine holder and bottom of the trough means trash flows through easily.  The tines wear well and it’s a good design, giving you real working depth even in tough conditions.

“Another plus is that string and rubbish doesn’t stay caught on the rotor.  It drops off as soon as the rotor stops spinning so there’s no need to get under and untangle it yourself.”

Derek recently bought a Kverneland AD85 five furrow plough, which both brothers use for maize cultivation.

Mark said he can adjust all the furrows and realign the rear wheel with a touch of a lever from the tractor seat.

“The Vari-Width seems to work really well,” he said.  You might want 20” for easy going, or 12” for heavy going and you can adjust it as you go.”

As with the harrow, Mark was impressed by the plough’s robust construction.

“We needed to turn the soil and bury the trash underneath to prepare a better seed bed.  If you have clods on top, they interfere with the corn planter,” he said.

“The AD85 handles the work well, it’s easy to use and built to last.”
